Today the Wesleyan Holiness Churches on Montserrat join in celebrating the life and service of
a man of God who was loving, generous, and demonstrated his Christian deeds through
charitable works, and a cooperative spirit, embracing his ministerial colleagues with warm bonds
of fellowship.

Rev Gumbs had a close relationship with the pastors and members of the Wesleyan Holiness
Church when he served the Calvary Baptist Church in Montserrat. There was often exchange of
pulpits between the two churches. The volcanic crisis in Montserrat caused him to leave the
island. However, he kept the link of communication with us in Montserrat. Whenever he
returned to the island, he visited our churches, and willingly preached the gospel message.
We will always remember Rev Gumbs for the concern he exhibited for not only the spiritual
needs of his church but also for the general health and wellbeing of the community in which he
worked. He organized various health teams to visit Montserrat who offered free dental and
general health checks to people across the island.

Rev Gumbs was never too busy to listen. He was an understanding pastor, always with a
pleasant smile and an encouraging word. He took delight in sending goodies to his Christian
brothers especially at Christmastime. Many of us received our ham and turkey from him, for he
found great delight in obtaining these goods, putting them on a boat and ensuring that they were
sent to folks in Montserrat – sharing Christian love as well as meeting economic needs.
Rev Gumbs, a faithful and devoted pastor, was a hardworking servant of the Lord Jesus Christ.

 He was a much loved and caring pastor
 He lived his life reflecting the Word of God
 He was fervent in prayer, agonizing and interceding for others
 He loved his God and the people under his care.
 He gave sterling service to the people of Montserrat, and his memory and legacy lives
on.
On behalf of the Pastors Rev Shane & Kellar McFarlane, Rev Dr. Ruth Allen, members and
friends of the Wesleyan Holiness Churches, and the wider Montserrat community, we express
our sincere condolences to Sis Gumbs, the children, and all the relatives and friends who mourn
his passing. Rest in the blessed hope that he has finished his course and a crown of righteousness
is his, and all those who live for His appearance.
