Pastor Norril McClean Gumbs

“His lord said unto him, Well done, thou good and faithful servant: thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things: enter thou into the joy of thy lord.” – Matthew 25:21 (KJV)
Born on April 2, 1941, in Deep Waters, Anguilla, Pastor Norril McClean Gumbs was the third of five children. Life presented early challenges, including the loss of his father while he was still a young boy. Raised by a strong and faithful mother, he learned resilience, responsibility, and reverence for God—qualities that would define both his character and his calling.
At age 18, while attending a revival service in St. Maarten, Norril made the life-changing decision to accept Jesus Christ as his personal Lord and Savior. That moment marked the beginning of a journey that would span islands and generations. His sense of divine calling led him to Blue Water Bible College in St. Thomas, where he spent three formative years studying God’s Word and preparing for ministry. It was there that he deepened his understanding of Scripture and solidified his commitment to serve.
His first pastoral role took him to St. Croix, where he served under Pastor Clifford Bubar at Fredricksted Baptist Church. As an assistant pastor, he began developing his pastoral identity—faithful in small things, diligent in his duties, and always willing to serve. But God had more in store.
Answering the call to Montserrat, Pastor Gumbs stepped out in faith into what would become one of the most significant chapters of his life. As the leader of Calvary Baptist Church, he served for 28 years, shepherding the flock with grace, humility, and unwavering strength. Under his leadership, the church became a spiritual home to many and a beacon in the wider community. He guided the congregation through years of growth and seasons of hardship, including the devastating volcanic eruptions that began in 1995. In the face of danger and uncertainty, his faith remained firm—revealing to all that God’s power is made perfect in our weakness.
Pastor Gumbs was more than a preacher. He was a mentor, a teacher, and a friend. His heart for children and education was evident in his commitment to Vacation Bible School (VBS), which he led personally for many years. As VBS grew, he trained others to take part, ensuring the program remained a vibrant part of the church’s outreach. Every Monday morning, he also visited the local primary school to lead devotions, planting seeds of faith in young hearts. These quiet, consistent acts of service left a lasting impact.
He walked with people through every season of life—officiating weddings, comforting families during funerals, and offering steady support through joys and sorrows. In every moment, he reminded his congregation of God’s presence and promises.
When Hurricane Hugo struck Montserrat in 1989, Pastor Gumbs exemplified compassionate leadership. He opened his doors to incoming volunteers and organized the distribution of relief aid to those affected. His actions brought James 2:17 to life: “Faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead.” His faith was never stagnant—it was faith in motion: working, serving, and loving.

In 1996, following the eruption of the Soufrière Hills volcano, Pastor Gumbs returned home to Anguilla. His ministry did not end—it simply changed locations. Back in his homeland, he took up the call once more, becoming instrumental in the completion of First Baptist Church building and its adjoining preschool. Thus, a new spiritual and educational foundation was laid for future generations.
His leadership, his commitment, and his love for God multiplied the treasure he carried. The church in Anguilla grew, lives were touched, and his legacy became rooted not only in buildings or programs, but in the hearts of the people he served.
Pastor Gumbs lived with quiet strength and deep conviction. He never sought the spotlight, but his life radiated the light of Christ. He was a servant-leader, a vessel of honor, and a man of God who allowed himself to be poured out for the sake of others.
