NO, I am not talking about Nat King Cole, but rather a man of excellence in service for God and a model of discipleship.
It was not long after I became a born again follower of Jesus Christ, that I heard of this faithful man of God, one who was part of what appeared then as the “dream team” of regional Baptist preachers. Having heard of him was one thing, but meeting and interacting with this passionate soul winner was another.
Just over a few short years ago, back in 1994, I first got the precious privilege and God sent opportunity to meet Pastor Gumbs. How can I forget the invaluable marriage counsel he gave me and my wife to be, before performing our wedding ceremony in Montserrat? What was most impressive, was that he followed our marriage and life throughout the years as if we were his very own. When the daughter he helped us pray for came, he loved her dearly, pet-naming her Abbie. Never once did we come in contact with him, without he literally pushing something in my hand and say “This is for Abbie”. Then he would open his Bible, show me Abbie’s name and remind me that he prays for her everyday. Oh what a man he was, having brought so much comfort and inspiration to my family.
When God spoke to my heart for ministry, it was never easy to accept, but among others, God sent a Barnabas in Pastor Gumbs to encourage and confirm the call. He was present at my ordination service and ever prayerful about my duty to God and others. He’s unforgettable!
How can I forget the great example of a man whose allegiance to Christ was firm and whose faith in God was unwavering to the end. So much so, that not long before he retired from pastoral work, he expressed his desire and interest in visiting First Baptist Church in Nevis once again. He simply had a love for people, a heart for ministry and compassion for the spiritually lost.
This humble and respected servant of the Most High will long be remembered. After saying to his Savior many years ago, “Lord, I’m available to you”, he now hears, “Well done, thou good and faithful servant”. I say, take your rest, my brother, and enjoy the company of the saints who have gone on before, and whose faith has ended in sight. Most importantly, delight in the joy of the Lord’s presence forevermore.
On behalf of my wife Karen, daughter Abeni, members of First Baptist Nevis and myself, I extend deepest condolences to his wonderful wife, Sister Eunice, their children, extended family, and Pastor and members of First Baptist Anguilla. Unforgettable! His work for God lives on!
