When I heard of the passing of Pastor Gumbs my heart grieved for the family. Then like a bolt of lightning a memory flashed into my mind and I broke down into tears. It was memory of a time in my early childhood when he stepped in and helped my family despite the battle we were facing. He acted with the determination of a protective father.

I was away studying when I heard he was planning to leave Montserrat during the volcanic crisis. I admit, I cried then too. It was a surprise that even though I was away, when he organized for a few of the Montserrat youths to attend IBYC before he left, he made sure I was included. I remember landing on Montserrat, repacking my bags and off to the airport with the others to head to Anguilla. I cannot express how deeply I was affected to be able to see the rest of his family again, because he didn’t forget me, Millie.

When I had my last child my family flew to Aguilla for Pastor Gumbs to dedicate him. It was my quiet way of saying, “I will never forget you Pastor and Sister Gumbs.” He laughingly told me he remembered dedicating me as a baby.

To Sister Gumbs and the entire family I want to thank you for sharing your beloved with us all. Sincere condolences from my family. We hold you in our heart and prayers.

Sweet be your rest, Pastor Gumbs. You are unforgettable.
